Privacy Policy
Boston Transit Companion · Effective May 30, 2026
Boston Transit Companion ("we", "the app") respects your privacy. This policy explains what
information the app handles and why. We do not sell your personal data.
Information We Handle
- Location. If you grant permission, the app uses your
device's location while you are using the app to show nearby transit
stops. Your location is processed on-device and is never stored on our servers
or shared.
- Commute schedules & push token. If you enable departure
notifications, the app sends your chosen stops, departure times, and an
anonymous Apple Push Notification (APNs) device token to our server so we can
deliver timely alerts. This data contains no name, email, or account identifier
and is used solely to send your notifications. You can disable notifications at
any time, which removes this data.
- Advertising. The app displays ads through Google AdMob.
AdMob may collect advertising identifiers and usage data to serve and measure
ads. With your consent (via the iOS App Tracking Transparency prompt), ads may
be personalized. You can decline tracking, and you can remove all ads entirely
via a one-time in-app purchase. See Google's policy:
policies.google.com/privacy.
- Diagnostics. The app uses Apple's MetricKit to collect
anonymous, aggregated performance and crash diagnostics. This data is provided
by Apple and contains no personally identifying information.
- Purchases. In-app purchases are processed by Apple. We
never see or store your payment information.
Transit Data
Real-time arrival data is provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation
Authority (MBTA) via its public API, proxied through our server for caching. We
do not send any personal information to the MBTA.
Data Retention
Commute schedules and push tokens are retained only while notifications are
enabled and are automatically purged after one year of inactivity.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect
personal information from them.
Your Choices
- Disable location access in iOS Settings.
- Disable notifications to remove your schedule and token from our server.
- Decline ad tracking via the App Tracking Transparency prompt.
- Purchase "Remove Ads" to stop all advertising.
Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected by an updated
effective date on this page.
